Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime Tea Plus Melatonin Review (2026)

Buy the 18 bag box of Sleepytime Tea Plus Melatonin at $4.96 (verified via the Amazon Creators API on September 5, 2026), about 28 cents a cup. It is the cheapest melatonin tea in the field and it is built on the chamomile blend most households already recognize. The catch is on the front of the box: the title does not state how much melatonin is in a bag, and two rival teas do.

Buy the Sleepytime Tea Plus Melatonin 18 bag box at $4.96 (verified via the Amazon Creators API on September 5, 2026), which works out to $4.96 / 18 = about 28 cents a cup. That is the least expensive melatonin tea we can verify, it comes from the most recognized name in the bedtime tea aisle, and it is the version of Sleepytime that actually contains melatonin. If knowing the milligram figure matters more to you than the price, buy Twinings Superblends Sleep+ at $11.58 instead, whose title states 1 mg per bag.

Here is the thing most shoppers get wrong about this product, and it is worth two sentences before anything else. The famous yellow Sleepytime box with the bear in the armchair contains no melatonin at all. Sleepytime Herbal Tea is a caffeine-free herbal blend and always has been; the melatonin version is a separate box that says "Plus Melatonin" on it, and a household that has been drinking the classic for years has never had a milligram of melatonin from it. Half the reason this page exists is to make that distinction concrete before you add the wrong box to a cart.

This review covers the whole Sleepytime shelf on Amazon: the melatonin box, the larger 48 bag Wellness Melatonin box, the TeaWell chamomile mint sleep tea, the classic, and the Extra blend. Then it benchmarks the line against the two teas that beat it on disclosure, Twinings Sleep+ at 1 mg per bag and Zest Sleep Tea at 2 mg. Every count, flavor and milligram figure below is what the Amazon listing title states, and nothing more; where a title truncates or omits a count, this page prints "not published" rather than a guess. Prices are live figures verified on September 5, 2026. No brand paid for a placement, and we may earn an Amazon commission if you buy through our links, which has never moved a ranking.

The short version

  • Our Pick: Sleepytime Tea Plus Melatonin, 18 bag box, $4.96, about 28 cents a cup. The cheapest melatonin tea in our verified field.
  • The classic yellow Sleepytime box has no melatonin in it. The melatonin version is a separate box that says Plus Melatonin, and the two are easy to confuse on a shelf and easier to confuse online.
  • The weak spot: the Sleepytime melatonin titles do not state a milligram amount. Twinings Sleep+ states 1 mg per bag and Zest states 2 mg, so if you want a known number, buy one of those.
  • The 48 bag Wellness Melatonin box costs $24.48, about 51 cents a bag, roughly double the small box per cup. Buy the small box unless you need the larger format specifically.
  • Sleepytime Extra at $4.96 for 20 bags is the valerian version of the blend and contains no melatonin; the classic at $5.39 for 25 bags is about 22 cents a cup and the cheapest per bag of the whole line.

At a glance

The Sleepytime melatonin shelf and the two benchmark teas. Melatonin per bag is stated only where the listing title states it. Counts are from the title; two titles truncate before the count, so those read not published. Prices are live Amazon figures verified via the Creators API on September 5, 2026. Cost per bag is price divided by count where the count is published.

Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime Tea Plus Melatonin, 18 Bag Box

Celestial Seasonings

The famous bedtime blend with melatonin added, at the lowest price per cup we can verify.

4.4

Our verdict: The right first melatonin tea for almost everyone, on price and on familiarity. At $4.96 for 18 bags it is about 28 cents a cup, which is a third of what Zest costs per bag, and the underlying blend is the one most households already accept at bedtime. The honest reservation is that the title never says how much melatonin is in a bag, so you are buying a blend rather than an amount.

Verified: Title states Sleepytime Tea Plus Melatonin, caffeine free, herbal tea, 18 bag box; the melatonin amount per bag is not published in the title. Live at $4.96 on Amazon, verified via the Creators API on September 5, 2026.

The cheapest way into a melatonin tea, from the only brand in the category with real shelf recognition. Sleepytime Tea Plus Melatonin is exactly what the name says: the Sleepytime herbal blend with melatonin added, caffeine free, in an 18 bag box for $4.96 as of the September 5, 2026 check. That is $4.96 / 18 = about 28 cents a cup, which makes it the least expensive melatonin tea in our verified field by a wide margin.

The one thing to check before you buy: this is not the classic yellow box. Sleepytime Herbal Tea is a caffeine-free herbal blend with no melatonin in it, and it has always been sold that way. The melatonin version says "Plus Melatonin" on the front. If you have been drinking Sleepytime for years and assumed you were getting melatonin, you were not, and that is the single most useful sentence on this page.

What this tea does well is the thing a bedtime routine actually needs, which is repeatability. A cup you like is a cup you will drink at the same hour every night, and the timing of a melatonin routine is at least as much of the story as the amount; that argument is laid out in when to take melatonin. What it does not do is tell you the number. If the milligram figure is the thing you care about, the tea to buy is Twinings Superblends Sleep+, whose title states 1 mg per bag, and the wider field is ranked in best melatonin tea.

One practical note about brewing a supplement rather than swallowing one: how much melatonin ends up in the cup depends on steep time, water temperature and whether you squeeze the bag, none of which any maker can control. That variability is real, it applies to every tea on this page, and it is the reason a tablet or a liquid is the better tool when a fixed amount is the goal.

Who should buy it

Buy it if you want a melatonin drink at the end of the night rather than a pill, you already like or expect to like the Sleepytime blend, and you are content to treat the amount as whatever the panel says rather than as a number you compare across products. At about 28 cents a cup it is also the cheapest way to find out whether the tea format works for you at all.

What we don't like

The title does not state the melatonin per bag, which is the whole disclosure problem with this category and the reason it is not a runaway pick. The 18 bag box is small enough that a nightly drinker replaces it every two and a half weeks, and it is genuinely easy to buy the melatonin-free classic by mistake, because the two boxes share a name, a bear and a blend.

Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime Wellness Melatonin, 48 Herbal Tea Bags

Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime Wellness Melatonin, 48 Herbal Tea Bags

Celestial Seasonings

The 48 bag Wellness Melatonin format, convenient but roughly double the cost per cup.

3.9

Our verdict: The bulk option in the line, and the one place where bulk does not pay. $24.48 for 48 bags is $24.48 / 48 = about 51 cents a bag, close to double the small box per cup. Buy it if you specifically want the Wellness blend or want to stop reordering; buy the small box if you want the best price.

Verified: Title states Sleepytime Wellness Melatonin, 48 herbal tea bags; the melatonin amount per bag is not published. Live at $24.48 on Amazon, verified via the Creators API on September 5, 2026.

More bags, worse math. Sleepytime Wellness Melatonin is the 48 bag box at $24.48, which is $24.48 / 48 = about 51 cents a bag. The 18 bag Plus Melatonin box works out to about 28 cents. Buying more of a bedtime tea normally lowers the per-cup number, and here it raises it by roughly 80 percent.

Read a tea listing the way you read a supplement listing: divide the price by the count before you decide anything. Bag counts in this aisle range from 15 to 48 and prices range from under five dollars to over twenty, so shelf price tells you almost nothing about what a cup costs. Two boxes of the same tea from the same brand can be nearly twice apart per bag, and this pair is the proof.

The Wellness line is a separate blend from the standard Plus Melatonin box rather than a bigger version of it, and like the rest of the line its title does not state a milligram figure. If the reason you were reaching for the larger box is that you drink a cup every night, the honest advice is to buy two or three of the small boxes instead and put the difference toward something with a stated amount, such as the products in best low dose melatonin.

Who should buy it

Buy it if the 48 bag format itself is the point, either because you are stocking a cabinet at work or because you want to reorder as rarely as possible, and the per-cup difference is not what you are optimizing for.

What we don't like

About 51 cents a bag against about 28 for the standard box is a bad trade for a nightly drinker, and the melatonin amount is no better disclosed here than anywhere else in the line.

Best If You Want Chamomile Mint
Celestial Seasonings TeaWell Sleep with Melatonin, Chamomile Mint

Celestial Seasonings TeaWell Sleep with Melatonin, Chamomile Mint

Celestial Seasonings

The chamomile mint sleep blend in Celestial's wellness range, with the thinnest disclosure of the line.

3.7

Our verdict: A flavor decision more than a value one. TeaWell is Celestial's wellness range and this is its sleep blend, chamomile and mint, with melatonin added. At $22.56 with no published count and no published amount, it is the hardest tea on this page to compare to anything, which is exactly why it sits here rather than higher.

Verified: Title states TeaWell Herbal Tea, Sleep with Melatonin, Chamomile Mint, caffeine free wellness tea; the title truncates before a full count and states no melatonin amount, so both read not published. Live at $22.56 on Amazon, verified via the Creators API on September 5, 2026.

The blend for someone who does not want the classic Sleepytime flavor. TeaWell Sleep with Melatonin is a chamomile mint tea in Celestial's wellness range, caffeine free, with melatonin added. If the herbal profile of the original box is the thing standing between you and a nightly cup, this is the alternative inside the same company.

Where our rule bites: the Amazon title for this listing truncates before it finishes stating a count, and it never states a melatonin amount. We will not guess either figure from the price, so this card carries two "not published" lines and no cost per bag. That is not a knock on the tea; it is a limit on what can honestly be said about it from the listing.

Practically, a chamomile mint blend is the easiest sleep tea to drink without sugar, which matters if the reason you are choosing tea over a gummy is that you are trying to keep sugar out of the last hour of the day. The sugar-free arguments in the gummy aisle are laid out in best sugar-free melatonin gummies, and the wider drink category is ranked in best sleep drinks with melatonin.

Who should buy it

Buy it if chamomile mint is the flavor that will actually get drunk in your house and you are comfortable buying a tea whose count and melatonin amount are on the panel rather than in the listing.

What we don't like

Neither the count nor the melatonin figure is published in the title, so there is no cost per bag and no way to compare it to the rest of the page, and at $22.56 it is one of the most expensive boxes here.

Twinings Superblends Sleep+ with 1 mg Melatonin, Camomile, Cinnamon and Vanilla

Twinings Superblends Sleep+ with 1 mg Melatonin, Camomile, Cinnamon and Vanilla

Twinings

The only major sleep tea whose front label states its milligram figure: 1 mg per bag.

4.6

Our verdict: The benchmark that exposes the weakness of the Sleepytime line. Twinings states 1 mg of melatonin per bag right in the product name, which is exactly what a shopper comparing tea to a tablet needs, and 1 mg sits inside the low range many clinicians favor. It costs more than double the Sleepytime box, and its own count is not published either.

Verified: Title states Superblends Sleep+ herbal tea with 1 mg melatonin, camomile, cinnamon and vanilla, naturally caffeine free; the title truncates before a count. Live at $11.58 on Amazon, verified via the Creators API on September 5, 2026.

The tea that answers the question. Twinings Superblends Sleep+ states 1 mg of melatonin per bag in the product title, alongside camomile, cinnamon and vanilla, and states that it is naturally caffeine free. That single number is why it is on this page. When a tea tells you its amount, you can put it next to a 1 mg tablet and make a real decision; when it does not, you cannot.

Why 1 mg is a sensible number for a tea: many sleep clinicians favor the lowest amount that works, commonly cited as 0.5 to 3 mg, and describe higher amounts as more likely to leave next-day grogginess. That is general guidance, not a prescription, and not something we are claiming about this or any product. But a bedtime drink that lands at the bottom of that range is a more defensible design than one that does not tell you where it lands at all.

If you buy several boxes at once, the Sleep+ six pack states 16 bags per box across 6 boxes at $33.29, which is 96 bags and $33.29 / 96 = about 35 cents a bag, the only Twinings figure on this page where the count is fully published. That is still more per cup than the Sleepytime pick, and you are paying the difference for a number on the label. The full tea field, including the melatonin-free blends, is ranked in best Sleepytime teas.

Who should buy it

Buy it if you want a tea and you want to know the amount, which is a completely reasonable pair of wants and one only this brand satisfies at scale. It is also the right tea for anyone stepping down from a 5 or 10 mg pill who wants to land somewhere deliberate rather than somewhere unlabeled.

What we don't like

The single box title truncates before its count, so cost per bag is only computable on the six pack, and at $11.58 it is more than double the price of the Sleepytime melatonin box. Cinnamon and vanilla is a more assertive flavor than plain chamomile, which not everyone wants at bedtime.

What we like

  • States 1 mg of melatonin per bag on the front of the box
  • 1 mg sits at the low end of the range clinicians commonly favor
  • Caffeine free, stated on the title

Worth noting

  • More than double the price of the Sleepytime melatonin box
  • Single box count not published

Zest Sleep Tea, 2 mg Melatonin, Chamomile Lavender, 15 Count

Zest Sleep Tea, 2 mg Melatonin, Chamomile Lavender, 15 Count

Zest

Two milligrams a bag, stated on the label, at the highest price per cup on the page.

4.0

Our verdict: The other tea that publishes its number, and the one that publishes the bigger number. Zest states 2 mg per bag and a 15 count pack, which makes it fully comparable: $14.98 / 15 = about $1.00 a cup. That is roughly three and a half times the Sleepytime pick per cup, which is the price of both the amount and the transparency.

Verified: Title states Sleep Tea, 2 mg melatonin, chamomile lavender herbal blend, 15 count pack. Live at $14.98 on Amazon, verified via the Creators API on September 5, 2026.

The most expensive cup on this page, and the most completely labeled. Zest Sleep Tea states 2 mg of melatonin per bag, names chamomile and lavender as the blend, and states a 15 count pack. Every figure a buyer needs is on the title, which is more than either Celestial or Twinings manages on a single box. The arithmetic is unforgiving: $14.98 / 15 = about $1.00 a cup.

Two milligrams against one, in a drink: the practical difference between the two labeled teas is not dramatic, and both sit inside the low range clinicians commonly favor. What differs more is how much of the labeled amount survives a short steep, which nobody can tell you and which applies to every tea equally. If you want a precise amount at bedtime, a fast-dissolve tablet or a liquid is simply the better instrument, and the tea is the ritual.

Zest is also a smaller brand than the two above it, which is why it earns a benchmark slot rather than the pick. If the 2 mg figure is what drew you here, note that a Natrol 1 mg fast dissolve tablet costs $6.97 for 90, about 8 cents a night, and states its amount to the milligram. The tea is worth paying for when the ritual is the point; it is not worth paying for as a delivery mechanism.

Who should buy it

Buy it if you want a tea that states its number and you want the larger of the two stated numbers, and a dollar a cup is acceptable to you for a nightly ritual you look forward to.

What we don't like

About $1.00 a cup is the highest per-bag figure on the page by a factor of three, the 15 bag pack is the smallest here, and Zest is a smaller brand than the two majors it sits beside.

Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime Extra Herbal Tea, 20 Tea Bags

Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime Extra Herbal Tea, 20 Tea Bags

Celestial Seasonings

The valerian version of the blend, no melatonin, at the same price as the melatonin box.

4.3

Our verdict: The box people reach for when melatonin is the thing they are trying to avoid. Celestial describes Extra as the valerian version of the Sleepytime blend, and its title states no melatonin at all. At $4.96 for 20 bags it is about 25 cents a cup, the same money as the melatonin box for a completely different premise.

Verified: Title states Sleepytime Extra Herbal Tea, 20 tea bags; Celestial describes Extra as the valerian version of the blend, and the title states no melatonin. Live at $4.96 on Amazon, verified via the Creators API on September 5, 2026.

The same brand, the opposite answer. Sleepytime Extra is what Celestial describes as the valerian version of the blend, and its Amazon title states 20 tea bags and no melatonin. It costs $4.96, the same as the melatonin box, and works out to $4.96 / 20 = about 25 cents a cup.

Why a melatonin-free box belongs in a melatonin review: a large share of the people searching for Sleepytime with melatonin end up deciding they do not want melatonin every night, either because of next-day grogginess or because they are already taking it in another form. Having the same ritual without the hormone, at the same price, from the same box design, is genuinely useful. The wider version of that shelf is best melatonin-free sleep aids, and the valerian products specifically are ranked in best valerian root supplements.

Valerian has its own trade-off, and it is a taste one: it is a more assertive, earthier herb than chamomile, and people either accept it quickly or never do. Buy one box before you buy several. If you want the mildest possible melatonin-free cup instead, the plain Sleepytime Herbal Tea is the softest option in the line at about 22 cents a cup.

Who should buy it

Buy it if you want the Sleepytime ritual without melatonin and you are open to valerian, either as a nightly alternative or as the box you use on the nights you are skipping melatonin on purpose.

What we don't like

Valerian is a divisive flavor, the title does not state amounts for anything in the blend, and 20 bags is a short box for a nightly drinker.

Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime Herbal Tea, 25 Tea Bags

Celestial Seasonings

The original yellow box: no melatonin, 25 bags, about 22 cents a cup.

4.5

Our verdict: The box everybody already knows, listed here so nobody buys it by accident thinking it contains melatonin. It does not. At $5.39 for 25 bags it is about 22 cents a cup, the cheapest per bag in the whole line, and it remains the mildest bedtime tea Celestial makes.

Verified: Title states Sleepytime Herbal Tea, 25 tea bags; the title states no melatonin. Live at $5.39 on Amazon, verified via the Creators API on September 5, 2026.

The famous one, and the one without melatonin. Sleepytime Herbal Tea is 25 caffeine-free bags for $5.39, which is $5.39 / 25 = about 22 cents a cup, the lowest per-bag figure on this page. Its title states no melatonin, because there is none in it.

The most common mistake in this aisle: assuming the yellow box has melatonin because it is the bedtime tea. It does not. If melatonin is what you are after, the box has to say "Plus Melatonin" or you are buying a herbal blend. This is the single reason we put a melatonin-free tea in a melatonin review.

Kept in the right frame, the classic is a genuinely good product: mild, cheap, universally available, and the safest thing in the line to drink every night without thinking about amounts, interactions or timing. If you want a bedtime cup and are not certain you want a supplement, start here, then decide. The Sleepytime variety pack at $21.48 states 20 tea bags per box but truncates before the number of boxes, so we publish no total count and no cost per bag for it.

Who should buy it

Buy it if you want the ritual and not the supplement, if you are already taking melatonin in another form and do not want a second source, or if you are buying tea for a household where not everyone should be having melatonin.

What we don't like

It contains no melatonin, which is a problem only if you thought it did. That confusion is common enough that we treat it as the product's main drawback rather than a footnote.

How we chose

Teas get ranked on the same protocol as every other format on this site, adapted to a tea bag: the melatonin per serving exactly as the listing states it, the blend as the maker describes it, the bag count, the cost per bag where the count is published, and how honest the front of the box is about what is inside. A tea that prints its milligram figure outranks one that does not, all else equal, because a bedtime drink whose amount you cannot look up is a bedtime drink you cannot compare to anything. We read the Supplement Facts panel and the live Amazon listing, verify price and availability through the Amazon Creators API (this page: September 5, 2026), and weigh the consistent testimony of owners. We do not run a lab and we never claim to have tested anything.

Tea with melatonin added is sold as a dietary supplement in the United States. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. We describe each blend as its label describes it and credit no ingredient with a benefit its label does not claim. Many sleep clinicians favor the lowest amount that helps, often cited as 0.5 to 3 mg, and that is general guidance rather than a prescription for anyone. Melatonin can interact with blood thinners, immunosuppressants, and blood-pressure and diabetes medication, so ask a pharmacist before adding it to a routine, and do not drive after drinking a cup. If pregnant or nursing, consult a doctor. Melatonin tea is not a kids product; the pediatric guidance lives on our kids pages.

Questions, answered

Does regular Sleepytime tea have melatonin in it?

No. The classic yellow box, Sleepytime Herbal Tea, is a caffeine-free herbal blend with no melatonin, and its listing title states none. The version with melatonin is a separate box called Sleepytime Tea Plus Melatonin, $4.96 for 18 bags at our September 5, 2026 check. If the box does not say Plus Melatonin or Wellness Melatonin, there is no melatonin in it.

How much melatonin is in Sleepytime Tea Plus Melatonin?

The listing title does not state a milligram amount, so we do not publish one. The figure is printed on the Supplement Facts panel on the box. If you want a tea whose amount is on the front of the package, Twinings Superblends Sleep+ states 1 mg per bag at $11.58 and Zest Sleep Tea states 2 mg per bag at $14.98 for 15 bags.

Is Sleepytime with melatonin worth it compared to a pill?

On price and precision, no. A Natrol 1 mg fast dissolve tablet is about 8 cents a night against about 28 cents a cup, and the tablet states its amount while the tea does not. On routine, tea is often the better buy, because a cup you look forward to is a habit you keep and a pill you resent is one you skip. Choose the tea for the ritual, not as a way to hit a number.

What is the difference between Sleepytime Extra and Sleepytime with melatonin?

Sleepytime Extra is what Celestial describes as the valerian version of the blend, and its title states no melatonin at all; it is $4.96 for 20 bags, about 25 cents a cup. Sleepytime Tea Plus Melatonin is the melatonin version, $4.96 for 18 bags, about 28 cents a cup. Same price, same brand, entirely different premise, so read the front of the box.

Is the 48 bag Wellness Melatonin box better value?

No. $24.48 for 48 bags is about 51 cents a bag, while $4.96 for 18 bags is about 28 cents. Buying the bigger box costs you roughly 80 percent more per cup. Buy the 48 bag format only if the format itself is what you want, for example to stop reordering, and not because bulk usually saves money, because here it does not.

Can children drink Sleepytime tea with melatonin?

This is an adult product and we do not recommend it for children. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises talking to a pediatrician before giving a child melatonin at all, using the lowest amount if a pediatrician agrees, and keeping every melatonin product out of reach; poison-control calls about pediatric melatonin ingestions rose sharply through the early 2020s. A brewed tea also delivers an unpredictable amount, which is the last thing you want for a child. The kids formats are covered separately on our kids pages.

Does steeping longer put more melatonin in the cup?

Steep time, water temperature and squeezing the bag all affect how much of anything ends up in the cup, and no maker can control that in your kitchen. That variability is inherent to brewing a supplement rather than swallowing one, and it applies to every tea on this page equally. If a consistent amount matters to you, a fast-dissolve tablet or a liquid with a marked dropper is the right tool.

Can I drink melatonin tea every night?

That is a question for a doctor or pharmacist rather than for us, particularly if you take blood thinners, immunosuppressants, or blood-pressure or diabetes medication, all of which melatonin can interact with. Many sleep clinicians favor the lowest amount that helps and treat melatonin as a short-term aid alongside a consistent routine rather than an indefinite nightly habit. That is general guidance, not a recommendation for you, and nothing on this page has been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
